Boesmanland High School in Pofadder has opened a new ICT multimedia centre, providing improved access to digital resources and skills for its 450 learners. Handed over by the Department of Education last year, the facility was completed within a year and is already making an impact, with an increase in learners pursuing Computer Applications Technology this academic year.
The project was led by Konkoonsies II Solar Energy Facility to support learning and teaching at the school. The new ICT centre includes 30 computers, satellite internet, and classroom technology. The initiative also included classroom renovations and improved security.
Jeremy Prins, Social Performance Co-ordinator for Aggeneys Solar and Konkoonsies II Solar, highlighted the potential benefits of integrating technology into education: “Introducing technology into classrooms has several advantages for both learners and teachers. These include improved learning outcomes, quicker access to information, enhanced teaching productivity, and the ability to incorporate diverse learning styles.”
The funding also includes the appointment of two facilitators to manage the centre. This is in addition to teacher support, learner training, and technical oversight. The centre fosters a positive and effective learning environment.
The facilitators guide teachers in incorporating ICT tools into lessons and address individual challenges in using technology effectively. For learners, the facilitators run digital literacy workshops, equipping them with essential skills for academic tasks and future opportunities. These workshops are also extended to local youth eager to improve their digital proficiency. Additionally, the facilitators are responsible for maintaining the centre’s equipment, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring the technology remains functional and accessible.
To ensure sustainability, the solar facilities will fund the centre’s internet connectivity for two years. The school management team has received training to run the centre and has developed policies and an implementation plan to take full ownership of the facility.
“Learners are improving their writing skills and completing research assignments with internet access. The technology caters to different learning styles,” concluded Principal Muller, Boesmanland High School.
