Isaiah Andreas, a top-performing student from Saldanha Bay, has been awarded the Umoya Energy Scholarship to study for a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering at the University of Cape Town (UCT). This scholarship is dedicated to empowering young individuals in the Saldanha Bay Municipal area by providing them with opportunities to further their education and advance their career prospects.
Due to his academic excellence, well-defined career goals, and as one of the top 40 students in the province, Isaiah was selected as a deserving recipient of this award.
“The funding and support from Umoya Energy Wind Farm has made a significant difference by relieving financial pressure on me and my family. It allows me to focus on my studies without worrying about tuition fees and other expenses,” expressed Isaiah Andreas.
Launched 10 years ago, this scholarship programme is designed to support human resource development in key fields critical to the South African economy, including Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), and Social Sciences. The programme specifically targets high school learners within a 50 km radius of Umoya Energy Wind Farm, ensuring that students from local communities have access to funding without competing against applicants from other provinces.
“These scholarships are crucial for youth in Hopefield and surrounding areas as they reduce the financial burden on families and provide access to tertiary education and personal growth opportunities. Many of our communities have limited resources, and this programme not only empowers students but also contributes to the broader development of the region by equipping young leaders with the knowledge and tools to drive positive change,” said Amber Zeeman, Social Performance Officer for Umoya Energy.
The scholarship provides full financial support, covering tuition, accommodation, a book allowance, a living allowance, and psychosocial support, ensuring a comprehensive support system for recipients throughout their academic journey. Isaiah joins five other students currently supported by Umoya Energy, bringing the total number of scholarship beneficiaries to six.
