Empowering and equipping youth with skills that increase employability is the core objective of a targeted upskilling programme, in the Northern Cape community of Loeriesfontein. This initiative is providing 19 young individuals, 12 of whom are women, with specialised training in electrical and welding trades. The programme equips participants with essential technical skills, preparing them for sustainable careers in the growing renewable energy sector.
Launched late last year and concluding this month, the programme is funded by Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind Farms. It aims to boost local employment and meet the growing demand for qualified workers in the renewable energy sector.
“Investing in skills development is one of the most impactful ways to empower communities and create lasting opportunities. Through this training programme, we are not only equipping individuals with valuable trade skills but also contributing to the growth of the renewable energy sector, which is vital for a sustainable future. We are particularly proud of the strong female representation in this cohort, as it reflects the growing interest of women in technical fields,” said Vanessa Fredericks, Economic Development Manager for Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind Farms.
Implemented in partnership with the Artisan Training Institute (ATI), the three-month training programme provides participants with essential technical skills such as circuit design, power distribution, and safety protocols, as well as welding techniques, such as metal fabrication, quality control, and safety practices in accordance with industry standards.
Beyond technical expertise, the programme also focuses on developing critical soft skills, including problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication, key competencies for success in both technical and remote work environments.
“I am determined to break the cycle of generational poverty and build a future in the electrical industry. This programme has given me the skills, strength, and motivation to push forward, even when challenges arise. I am not just doing this for myself, but for my family and my community. To my peers, I say: seize every opportunity, work hard, and never let anything distract you from your goals,” said Luveney Lombard, a programme participant.
To further support their journey, the wind farms covered the costs of accommodation, meals, and a monthly stipend for the trainees. Additionally, participants received essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), durable, close-fitting ankle boots with elastic side panels, and all necessary learning materials to ensure their preparedness and success throughout the programme.
