To promote road safety and educate the local community, government departments and local stakeholders, including the Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality, collaborated to launch a Road Safety Activation Campaign. Key entities such as the Department of Community and Road Safety, the Office of the MEC, the Office of the Premier, the Community Police Forum, and Zeerust Solar prioritised this initiative during the festive season.
Held at the N4 and R39 intersection in Zeerust, the campaign was led by the Premier of the North West, Honourable Lazarus Mokgosi. Supported by Zeerust Solar, the initiative aimed to raise awareness about the devastating impact of road accidents and encourage safer driving habits.
“Safety is at the heart of everything we do. Whether on our project site or within the community, we strive to promote initiatives that safeguard lives. Partnering with the government and stakeholders in this road safety campaign aligns with our values and our commitment to the well-being of those travelling on our roads,” said Qinisani Siveshe, Social Performance Manager for Zeerust Solar.
The intersection of the N4 and R39 was chosen as the activation site due to its high traffic volume. As one of the busiest routes, this location provided an opportunity to reach and engage a large number of motorists, ensuring that road safety messages were effectively communicated to those travelling across the region.
“Road safety plays a crucial role in keeping our communities safe, not just for drivers but for pedestrians as well. It impacts everyone, whether they are behind the wheel or walking along the roads,” said Dina M. Pitso, Councillor of Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality.
The activation event commenced with a morning parade, followed by a briefing session for attendees, while law enforcement officials conducted compliance checks on vehicles. Zeerust Solar, alongside other stakeholders, distributed road safety pamphlets and gift items, including car disk holders, water bottles, and caps, to motorists as part of the awareness drive.
“We urge all road users to follow the rules of the road throughout the year. Our goal is to prevent accidents and reduce fatalities. This campaign serves as a reminder that road safety and law enforcement should be a priority every day, not just on special occasions,” concluded the Head of the Local Police Department, Dr. Hans Kekana.
