Young children at two ECD centres in Bergsig and Nababeep will now have access to fresh, nutritious food through newly established food gardens, promoting health from an early age.
This Early Childhood Development programme, funded by Kangnas Wind Farm, aims to provide a consistent supply of fresh produce, ensuring that young children receive the healthy meals essential for their growth and development. These gardens will also serve as an educational tool, teaching children and caregivers about gardening, sustainable living, and the importance of healthy eating.
“We are committed to enhancing food security and promoting development through the support of food gardens at ECD centres. This initiative is not just about feeding children today, it’s about fostering a long-term culture of good nutrition, better health, and food sustainability within the community,” said Rouchet Daniels, Economic Development Manager for Kangnas Wind Farm.
As part of this initiative, Wielie Walie Kleuterskool en Nasorg Sentrum and Kabouterland benefitted from essential infrastructure improvements, including the installation of fencing, an irrigation system, soil preparation, and the provision of a JoJo tank. These enhancements will help create a sustainable food source for the children, improve their nutrition, and provide an interactive learning experience about agriculture and sustainability.
“The food garden will not only provide good nutrition for the children but also educate them about gardening and vegetables. It will also help the school save money on buying fresh produce, and well-nourished learners are better able to concentrate and perform in class,” said Annelien Van Schalkwyk. Principal at Kabouterland.
Additionally, the materials for fencing, irrigation, security lighting, and JoJo tanks were sourced from local suppliers, further supporting economic development within the community.
By investing in food security and sustainability, Kangnas Wind Farm is addressing both immediate and long-term community needs. This initiative aligns with the wind farm’s broader commitment to sustainable development, ensuring that future generations have access to nutritious food and the skills to cultivate it.
