Investing in education plays a crucial role in shaping young people’s future, particularly in critical fields such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). In recognition of their academic excellence and dedication to these vital sectors, three STEM students from the Northern Cape have been awarded scholarships through the REISA Solar Scholarship Fund.
For scholarship recipient Stan Plessie from Dieplkloof, Olifantshoek, the bursary has offered a life-changing opportunity. Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Electrical Engineering, his passion for the field was ignited at a young age “As a child, I was always fascinated by how electrical appliances worked and could fix them without formal training. By Grade 10, I knew exactly what I wanted to study,” said Plessie.
“This bursary not only relieves the financial burden of my studies but also provides mentorship, emotional support, and skills development that will give me a competitive edge in the job market. My dream is to become a certified engineer, and this scholarship is helping me make that a reality,” he added.
Established in 2015, the REISA Solar Scholarship Fund is dedicated to supporting youth residing within a 50km radius of the solar facility, including Kathu, Olifantshoek, Dibeng, Siyathemba, Babatas, and Mapoteng. The programme covers a comprehensive range of expenses, including tuition, accommodation, stationery, textbooks, laptops, and living allowances, ensuring that recipients can fully focus on their academic journey.
“Financial constraints often hinder young people from furthering their education, but our Scholarship Fund is changing that narrative. Bursaries like these uplift and empower students, giving them the chance to reach their full potential without financial and emotional stress impacting their performance,” said Shariefa Rhode, Social Performance Manager for REISA Solar.
The remaining two recipients are pursuing Environmental Management and Geology, respectively. Currently, the programme supports six students, providing financial support, mentorship programmes, psycho-social support and personal development initiatives designed to enhance their academic and career success.
