A new healthcare initiative has been launched in Loeriesfontein to address critical healthcare needs in the community. This Primary Health Care Programme is making quality healthcare more accessible by employing a professional nurse and five community care workers at the Loerisfontein Thusong Centre to enhance local health services.
This initiative, funded by Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind farms, was developed following consultations with local health stakeholders, who identified gaps in healthcare access and delivery.
“This programme represents a significant step forward in strengthening the community’s healthcare By bringing healthcare services closer to home, essential preventive care are now more readily available to all residents,” stated Vanessa Fredericks, Economic Development Manager for Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind Farms.
Since its launch, the programme has made meaningful progress in improving healthcare access. The professional nurse plays a vital role in patient examinations and prescription management while also maintaining important links with the local clinic and the Department of Health to ensure seamless referrals and integration with existing healthcare structures.
The community care workers, who have been fully trained and equipped, conduct daily home visits and manage chronic patient groups. Their responsibilities include tracking and supporting TB and HIV/AIDS patients, conducting health promotion activities, and organising community outreach programmes to raise awareness and encourage preventive care.
“The Primary Health Care Programme is a great asset to the community. The residents truly appreciate the work we do and are grateful for the programme. As Community Health Workers, we also enjoy our work and are thankful for the funding provided by the wind farms, which enables us to continue assisting the community. Going door-to-door helps us understand people’s living conditions firsthand, ensuring we can offer the necessary healthcare support effectively,” said Catherine Beukes, one of the care workers.
To further ensure the long-term success of the programme, a local health committee has been established, empowering community members to take greater ownership of their health. Through this initiative, Loeriesfontein residents now have improved access to quality healthcare services, benefiting from early disease detection and prevention measures, as well as increased health education and awareness. By addressing healthcare challenges at the grassroots level, this programme is fostering a healthier, more resilient community, with ongoing collaboration between stakeholders ensuring a lasting, positive impact.
